It was a busy weekend for the lab! While Alyn and Maria represented the lab in Rockville Centre (see previous blog post), I had the opportunity to present a recent study at the Fall Voice Conference in Phoenix, AZ.
The presented retrospective study considered the effect of motor phenotype in people with Parkinson's disease on their fundamental frequency, vocal intensity, and Acoustic Voice Quality Index. The statistical analysis revealed a significant effect of biological sex, with males presenting with lower fundamental frequencies throughout (no surprise). However, no phenotypical differences were found for intensity, fundamental frequency, and Acoustic Voice Quality measures. Nevertheless, the study provided more information on potential phenotypical differences (or lack thereof) in people with Parkinson's disease. A huge thank you to dr. Christopher Watts (Texas Christian University) for making this study possible, and Hailey Troise for her help with analyzing the sound files.
It felt good to attend the Fall Voice Conference after a little hiatus. Many engaging presentations and panels provided food for thought. Many thanks to the organization, and looking forward to attending future editions.
